African Americans and the West Side of Asbury Park
The vast majority of African Americans who migrated to Asbury Park have primarily settled on the West Side of the city. This was apparent throughout much of the twentieth century. These photos were taken by Joseph A. Carter, Sr. (1917-1980). Carter was a photographer on the West Side who documented African American culture and society in Asbury Park during much of the twentieth century. His daughter Madonna Carter Jackson has preserved these photographs and allowed us to share them on our website.
